We waren naar Material District met Esther en Charlotte van Stichting Bijzonder. 

Als materiaal explorer volg ik de laatste ontwikkelingen, die vooral online gedeeld worden. Dan kun je soms samples bestellen, maar vaak ben je afhankelijk van digitale info. Dan voelt het echt als een snoepwinkel om naar Material District te gaan om al die materialen te kunnen zien en voelen. 
Grote perk van het evenement vind ik de Sample expo's. Tafels waar vele materialen zijn geexposeerd. Je mag ze voelen en kunt meer info over ze vinden via een korte uitleg en een qr code.

Zo kon ik bijvoorbeeld het transparante leer van Ecco Leather in in mijn handen vasthouden! Wat is dat toch een enorm nieuwsgierig innovatief bedrijf!

 

Naast het voelen en zien van de materialen is het spreken van de mensen achter de materialen natuurlijk ook waar het om draait. Zo sprak ik Celestine van Design Van Hier. Ze transformeren locale biomassa naar materiaal. Ik kan je aanraden hun materiaal te ruiken als je de kans krijgt. Het ruikt naar de lente!

Het was een groot genoegen om Zsofia Kollar te spreken over haar Human Material Loop. Ze gebruikt menselijk haar van kapsalons om textiel van te maken. 

 

Ik volg Lionne van Deursen al een tijdje. Ze is een inspiratiebron voor me en is al langer bezig met Scoby en Kombucha. Ze lijkt het materiaal al echt in de vingers te krijgen en experimenteert met de eigenschappen door het te vouwen en bewerken.

Het werk van Agne Kucerenkaite was nieuw voor me. Ze gebruikt Amber om keramiek en vellen van te maken. Dit samen met de vellen van Studio Charde Brouwe gemaakt van restafval van de voedselindustrie gaven me zin om te experimenteren. Hoe sterk is het? Zou ik er een heuptasje van kunnen maken? Hoe zou het reageren op een naaimachine? Is het te graveren?

Er blijkt hier in de buurt van Kanaal30 ook vanalles te gebeuren. Iets verder langs het kanaal zit sinds kort de Kiemkamer. Een lokaal test gebied voor een groene, duurzame en circulaire wereld. Ze willen een nest voor talent laten groeien. 

Tot slot was ik gefascineerd door het werk van Sharhar Livne. Door deze studio was bloed vanuit het slachthuis verwerkt tot bloed leer. Het project bevraagd de constructie en deconstructie van levende wezens door mensen. 

 

Er is nog zoveel te ontdekken en uitproberen. Let's go!!

I was at Material District with Esther and Charlotte from Stichting Bijzonder.

As a material explorer I follow the latest developments, these are mainly shared online. Sometimes you can order or get samples, but often you are dependent on digital information. Then it really feels like a candy store to go to Material District to be able to see and feel all those materials.
The biggest perk of the event is the Sample expos. Tables where many materials are exhibited. You can feel them and find more info about them through a short explanation and a qr code.

For example, I could hold the transparent leather of Ecco Leather in my hands! What a innovative company that is!

 

In addition to feeling and seeing the materials, speaking to the people behind the materials is what it's all about. For example, I spoke to Celestine from Design Van Hier. They transform local biomass into material. I can recommend that you smell their material if you get the chance. It smells like spring!

It was a great pleasure to speak to Zsofia Kollar about her Human Material Loop. She uses human hair from hair salons to make textiles. Mind blowing right?

I have been following Lionne van Deursen for a while. She is a source of inspiration for me and has been working with Scoby and Kombucha for some time. She already seems to really get to grips with the material and is experimenting with its properties by folding and processing it.

Agne Kucerenkaite's work was new to me. She uses Amber to make ceramics and sheets. This, together with the sheets from Studio Charde Brouwe made from residual waste from the food industry, made me want to experiment. How strong is it? Could I make a fanny pack out of it? How would it react to a sewing machine? Can it be engraved?

It turns out that a lot of things are happening here in the vicinity of Kanaal30. A little further along the canal, the Kiem Kamer has recently moved in. A local test area for a green, sustainable and circular world. They want to grow a nest for talent.

Finally, I was fascinated by the work of Sharhar Livne. Blood from the slaughterhouse was processed into blood leather by this studio. The project questions the construction and deconstruction of living beings by humans.
