Newsletter March

28 March 2023

Hello all!

After re-installing our expo in the shop of Kanaal 30, it is time for a first newsletter. Settled in on the orange couch in the studio I will share some insights, information and inspiration.

You can expect insights from the questionnaire Gabriël send out. Information about our research towards a compostable bag and some inspiration to get your weekend started!

Hope you like it!

Insights - questionnaire

Thanks so much for your responses on the questionnaire! It got Gabriël van Meurs started with his graduation project of developing compostable haberdashery (the hardware on your bag like buckles and zippers). Part of the mission to a bag you can bury in the ground.
Look at some of the results we got:

- 59% think they know the difference between compostable and biodegradable materials, 34% dont know the difference.
I was surprised with the amount of knowledge you have! I only recently learned about the difference between compostable and bio degradable.
- 46% expect a bag to last 2-5 years, 41% expect a bag to last more than 5 years.
I love that more and more people use their bag longer than a season!
- 69% think that the combination of the color of the haberdashery and textile is should be fitting.
We can use this in the design of the compostable bag!
- Of the 71 participants, 60 people have zippers in their bag (85%), 58% have a sliding buckle, 38% have a snap hook, 27% have a magnet and 25% have a d-ring in their bag
This helps us prioritize the hardware we should create!

We have now entered the next phase of the research; testing and prototyping different materials. More about that the next time!

Information - Compostable versus Biodegradable

Once you dive into a subject, you find out that definitions matter. Thanks to the research of Gabriel we have learned that for the burying of the bag to be meaningfull you would like the materials to be compostable instead of biodegradable. But what is the difference?

In principle all materials are degradable however the true definition comes with the timespan that materials get broken down.

Compostable products have undergone strict testing to ensure that they break down within a specific time frame (at home within 6 months) and do not release anything harmful into the environment.

Biodegradable products have no such requirements, meaning that they may not be as beneficial as they first appear. Seems like a form of green washing to me.

We enjoy doing these experiments as well in the studio. Follow our stories on instagram to see how they go!

Music inspiration

The new Album of Lil Yaughty "Let's start here" has been on repeat this week. Every time I think aha I get it…I get swung in another direction by the music…love it!

Would love to make a bag like that
